Unprecedented “handing over” press conference joining the current and the new Grand Mufti

In a major press conference, the current Mufti, Sheikh Ali Gomaa and the newly appointed Mufti Sheikh Shawqi ‘Abdelkarim will appear before national media to publicly handover the responsibility of the Grand Mufti of Egypt from the former to the latter. This “handing over” press conference is a precedent in the history of Dar al Iftaa and a sign of professionalism which is absent from the policies of institutions in Egypt.

The senior advisor of the Grand Mufti, Dr. Ibrahim Negm, announced that the press conference aims at giving the right image about Dar al Iftaa and its institutional ability to carry on the heavy duty which lies upon its shoulder. Negm reiterated that Sheikh Ali Gomaa is keen on handing over the responsibility of this major religious position to the new Mufti in a professional and civilizational manner with the hope that this move becomes a role model for other institutions to follow.

During the press conference, Sheikh Ali Gomaa, will thank deeply the eminent scholars in the Council of Senior Scholars (CSS) headed by the Grand Imam Sheikh Ahmad al Tayeb for their outstanding efforts in choosing the new Grand Mufti of Egypt. The selection process of the new mufti is considered a great achievement which grants this great institution a new level of independence that Sheikh Ali Gomaa always hoped for and pursued during all his years in this eminent position as the Grand Mufti of Egypt. Sheikh Ali during his tenure succeeded in achieving administrational and financial independency for Dar al Iftaa away from the Ministry of Justice. After the press conference, the two muftis will have a long meeting in which they discuss the new developments which can be carried out in Dar al Iftaa to maintain its historical role as a major religious institution in Egypt. The press conference will be held next Sunday in Dar al Iftaa at 10.30 am.
